May 2009Salem Vintage Dances Salem’s Old Town Hall will once again witness the lively music and sprightly dances of its past. Come and experience 19th century social dances, including quadrilles, contra dances, waltzes and polkas. This is a new series of dances, with prompting by Barbara Pugliese. Salem Vintage Dances will take place from 8:00 to 11:00 pm on 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month. Live music will be provided and all dances will be taught. Beginners will find that no prior experience is needed. Historical costumes are admired but not required. Please wear comfortable indoor shoes, sneakers or rubber soled shoes are not recommended. 22nd Annual Newport Vintage Dance Week Travel back in time to the summer playground of the Gilded Age. Perfect your dancing skills with classes taught by leading experts on vintage dance. Experience the breathtaking opulence of America’s finest ballrooms as you dance in Newport’s famous mansions. Let yourself be immersed in a bygone era as you sip tea by the shore. We are planning a new and exciting Dance Week for this year. The biggest change will be our new home: the campus of Roger Williams University in charming Bristol, RI (just 5 minutes from Portsmouth, approx. 30 minutes from Newport). Formal balls will be held at mansions in Newport and Portsmouth including The Astors' Beechwood, Glen Manor House and the Rotunda Ballroom at Easton's Beach. Live music will be provided by Spare Parts. Formal or semi-formal attire is requested, period attire is especially welcome. Light refreshments will be provided at the intermission. Current plans include a dance workshop, taught by Ben Bishop, to be held the day of the ball. A Vintage Dance instructor will conduct three dance workshops on Saturday and prepare participants for the Vintage Ball Saturday, where you can show off your new steps in vintage costume to live music by Spare Parts. Please join the members of the Elegant Arts Society for our annual Assembly, two days of early nineteenth century dance and pastimes from the era of Jane Austen, Napoleon, Beau Brummel, and Lord Byron. Saturday afternoon, prepare for the evening's ball with a dance workshop. In the evening, join us in formal wear or period costume for a lively ball with music by the wonderful musicians of Spare Parts and delicious refreshments prepared from the sources of the era. The ball and dance workshops will be precepted by Susan de Guardiola, who will lead us in lively country dances and Scotch reels along with the Caledonian Quadrilles, and the scandalous Waltz. For more detailed information visit the Salem Vintage Dances webpage December 2009Victorian Winter Holiday Ball Moments in Time cordially invites you to attend their annual Victorian Winter Holiday Ball at Keeney Memorial Hall, 150 Main Street, 8:00-11:00 p.m. Precepted by Marc Casslar, the ball will feature live music by the New River Dance Orchestra. Formal, period or military attire is encouraged. An effort will be made to maintain a reasonable gender balance. Unregistered couples will be admitted at the door only if space is available, so advance registration is strongly urged. View flyer pdf here.
