Sense and Sensibility in Salem Promenade

Saturday, September 9, 2017

Promenade 2:00-4:00 pm – Meet at NPS Welcome Center, 2 Liberty Place, Salem, MA

Ball 7:00-10:00 pm – Old Town Hall, 20 Front Street, Salem, MA

During the early 19th century, Salem MA was a bustling hub as one of the largest shipping cities in the country, with harbor activity from whalers, military vessels, and privateers. As Jane Austen was publishing her celebrated novels in the UK, readers in Salem obtained them quickly and enjoyed them. Whether you’re interested in local history, an avid Austenite, or just in the mood to stroll with friends, join us in September to step back in time and experience a bit of Salem’s cultural history!

Regency Promenade

In the grand tradition of other Regency events worldwide, we will be hosting a promenade on Saturday afternoon to try and make a Guiness World Record for most people gathered in Regency attire. All participants must be dressed in period attire to be counted, but others are welcome to come along and cheer us on! The promenade will commence from our starting registration point, where participants can check in to receive their official ribbon (included in the ticket price) and line up. We will then go forth together through Salem past the film team, who will be gathering the video to send to GWR as our official entry. The planned route will be a loop and end back at the starting point, but participants are welcome to explore on their own once they’ve been officially counted. In case of rain, we will hold a gathering in place of the promenade at the registration point and ticket holders will still receive their official ribbon.

If you would like to participate but do not currently own period attire, you can read a summary of major elements for ladies (here) and gentlemen (here) for inspiration.

The entry cost for the promenade is $5, which covers the cost of the official participation ribbon and helps us plan our numbers in advance. Tickets are available now!

Sense and Sensibility in Salem Ball

On Saturday evening we will be hosting a ball at the historic Old Town Hall. All dancing will be taught and period dress is not required, but will be much admired! More details and tickets for that event are available on the event page here.
